About the Piece

"The Easter Rising was a significant moment in Irish history that would eventually lead to events that brought about the formation of the Irish State. I created this artwork to identify the various stakeholders, all those who were directly affected by the events of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin City. It consists of a wide range of diverse groups that made up the brigades and factions of the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizens Army, and Cumann na mBan, as well as those involved in the British administration such as the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Various Irish regiments of the British Army were stationed back in Ireland from the Great War during that time, many of whom were Irish themselves. But also amidst the badges are the civilians of Dublin, the business owners, families and children of the inner city who suffered more casualties than the combatants and whose lives were most deeply affected by those events. ”

Alan is an Irish visual artist and author who works mostly in illustration, comics, graphic printmaking, paper craft, and motion graphics. He is passionate about all aspects of the graphic arts and is hugely interested in vernacular design and uncovering stories through cultural historical archives. This is reflected in his heavily researched and considered comics, heritage-based commissions and through re-appropriation of vernacular typography and graphic aesthetics in his work.

Junction

About the Piece

“‘Junction’ is an allegorical depiction of the progression of political and societal change in Ireland brought about by social movements throughout the last two centuries.

References to the British administration, and symbols of the dominance of the Catholic Church, gives way to the arrival of the Irish Republic and a new era through successive referendums.

The mass movement of the green crowd is crossing a traffic light junction - from a conservative past to a liberal future, led by a female character.”

“I created this artwork inspired by a line from Emily Dickinson's well-loved poem: ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers’. It is an allegorical piece that suggests hope and possibility.”

feathers -

That perches in the soul -

little Bird

And on the strangest Sea -

Yet - never - in Extremity,

It asked a crumb - of me.
