A Perfect Trust is a graphic short that I wrote and illustrated about a chaplain in the trenches of World War I. Based on much historical research, it won the Illustration for Publishing category at the Irish Design Award 2017. It was exhibited as part of a touring exhibit about military chaplains by the Irish Jesuit Archive, South Dublin County Council and the Office of Public Works (OPW). It features in the Stray Lines Irish Comics Collective anthology No.2
This print was made in response to the events surrounding 1916 Easter Rising.

"The Easter Rising was a significant moment in Irish history that would eventually lead to events that brought about the formation of the Irish State. I created this artwork to identify the various stakeholders, all those who were directly affected by the events of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin City. It consists of a wide range of diverse groups that made up the brigades and factions of the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Citizens Army, and Cumann na mBan, as well as those involved in the British administration such as the Dublin Metropolitan Police. Various Irish regiments of the British Army were stationed back in Ireland from the Great War during that time, many of whom were Irish themselves. But also amidst the badges are the civilians of Dublin, the business owners, families and children of the inner city who suffered more casualties than the combatants and whose lives were most deeply affected by those events. ”

“‘Junction’ is an allegorical depiction of the progression of political and societal change in Ireland brought about by social movements throughout the last two centuries.
References to the British administration, and symbols of the dominance of the Catholic Church, gives way to the arrival of the Irish Republic and a new era through successive referendums.
The mass movement of the green crowd is crossing a traffic light junction - from a conservative past to a liberal future, led by a female character.”

“I created this artwork inspired by a line from Emily Dickinson's well-loved poem: ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers’. It is an allegorical piece that suggests hope and possibility.”

“The piece ‘Merlin’ is of a merlin hawk flying over the Sheeffry Mountains in Co Mayo. It is inspired by the poem A Merlin in the Sheffrys by Irish poet Martin Dyar. The colour palette is limited to earthy shades of green and grey, and the bird is a focal point in the image against an aerial view of the Sherries as a backdrop. The textures are rugged like the terrain. I created a variety of textures and combined them digitally to create this illustration.
I drew on influences from some of my favourite 20th-century English artists Eric Ravilious and Bernard Cheese who often depicted rural-themed scenes.”
